Acebutolol Dosage: An Introduction
The dose of
acebutolol hydrochloride (
Sectral®) that your healthcare provider recommends will vary depending on a number of factors, including:
- The medical condition being treated
- Your age
- How you respond to the medication
- Other medications you are taking
- Other medical conditions you may have.
As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically instructs you to do so.
As with all
beta blockers, you should not abruptly stop taking acebutolol, as serious problems (including
heart attacks) may result. Your healthcare provider will advise you about how to safely stop taking this medication. It is usually recommended to slowly reduce the dose over a period of time, with careful monitoring, and to minimize physical activity during this time. Let your healthcare provider know if you develop chest pain or any other problems while stopping acebutolol.
Acebutolol Dosing for High Blood Pressure
For most people, the starting acebutolol dosage for
high blood pressure treatment is 400 mg once daily. In some cases, your healthcare provider may recommend splitting this into two smaller doses (200 mg twice daily) if necessary to control your
blood pressure. Also, your healthcare provider may slowly increase your dose up to a maximum of acebutolol 600 mg twice daily if necessary.
A lower dosage is usually recommended for elderly individuals; in such patients, the maximum recommended dosage is usually 800 mg total per day. Elderly individuals do not metabolize acebutolol or clear it from the body as quickly as younger people.
