Precautions and Warnings With Acebutolol

There are many warnings and precautions to be aware of with acebutolol. For example, certain medications may interact with this product. Also, this drug can worsen certain conditions, such as asthma or heart failure. Other precautions and warnings involve the safety of taking this medication if you have bradycardia and the risk of serious side effects in some people using acebutolol.

What Should I Tell My Healthcare Provider Before Taking Acebutolol?

You should talk with your healthcare provider prior to taking acebutolol hydrochloride (Sectral®) if you have:
 
  • Peripheral artery disease (PAD)
  • Mesenteric vascular disease (problems with the blood vessels of the intestines)
  • Liver disease, such as liver failure, cirrhosis, or hepatitis
  • Kidney disease, such as kidney failure (renal failure)
  • Diabetes
  • Chest pain (angina)
  • Heart failure
  • A slow heart rate (bradycardia)
  • Asthma
  • Chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD)
  • Hyperthyroidism
  • An upcoming surgery
  • Any allergies, including allergies to food, dyes, or preservatives.
     
Also, let your healthcare provider know if you are:
 
  • Pregnant or thinking of becoming pregnant
  • Breastfeeding.
     
Make sure to tell your healthcare provider about all other medicines you are taking, including prescription and non-prescription medicines, vitamins, and herbal supplements.
