Closed Caption - Leaving the Hospital After Electrical Cardioversion

When you leave the hospital you will be given specific discharge instructions for driving, activity level, medication, future blood tests, follow-up appointments and any further restrictions or lifestyle changes necessary.

Plan to have a family member or friend drive you home from the facility. You will not be allowed to drive yourself home, because drugs used during or after your procedure may still be affecting you and your ability to drive safely.

It is likely that you will continue taking, or be placed on a blood-thinning medicine. This is to prevent the formation of blood clots, which are known to cause strokes and other potentially harmful disorders.

Once you are home, return to your normal routine, unless otherwise directed, when you feel ready.

Be sure to take your medicine as directed and be aware that your irregular heartbeat may return. If you feel skipped beats, a rapid heartbeat, or tightness in your chest, call your doctor.
