In extreme cases, breathing problems can be serious enough to require the use of a ventilator. A ventilator is a machine that takes over your own breathing. Being on a ventilator requires the placement of a plastic tube into your windpipe. The tube is connected to the ventilator and air enters your lungs through this tube. While on a ventilator, you will not be able to talk, eat or drink. How long a patient remains on a ventilator depends on the cause of the breathing problem, and the patient's ability to recover. This time period could be temporary, or permanent.
