Side Effects of Esmolol

Common side effects of esmolol that were seen in clinical studies include low blood pressure, nausea, and dizziness. In most cases, side effects of this medication are mild and do not require treatment. However, there are a number of possible side effects that are potentially serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider immediately, including a slow heart rate, seizures, or breathing problems.

An Introduction to Esmolol Side Effects

As with any medicine, side effects are possible with esmolol hydrochloride (Brevibloc®). However, not everyone who takes the medication will experience side effects. In fact, most people tolerate it quite well. If side effects do occur, in most cases, they are minor and either require no treatment or can easily be treated by you or your healthcare provider.

Serious Side Effects Seen With Esmolol

There are a number of possible esmolol side effects that are potentially serious and should be reported to your healthcare provider right away. These include, but are not limited to:
 
  • Very low blood pressure
  • A slow heart rate
  • Worsening of heart failure
  • Depression
  • Seizures
  • Breathing problems, such as asthma
  • Allergic reaction, including unexplained rash, hives, itching, unexplained swelling, wheezing, or difficulty breathing or swallowing.
