Over 50 different heart diseases affect the heart and/or the blood vessel system within it. The most common heart disease is coronary artery disease. Some of these diseases may be present at birth; others develop during a person's lifetime.
 
A few examples of diseases that affect the coronary arteries and veins include angina, a heart attack, silent ischemia, and atherosclerosis. Some diseases that affect the heart chambers include congestive heart failure and pulmonary heart disease. Among the heart diseases that people are born with are pulmonic stenosis, congenital aortic stenosis, and atrial septal defect (ASD).
