Propafenone Extended-Release Information

A healthcare provider may prescribe propafenone SR (Rythmol SR®) to treat an abnormal heart rhythm called atrial fibrillation (commonly referred to as "a-fib"). It comes as a capsule that is taken twice daily, with about 12 hours between doses.

Propafenone SR is specifically approved for use in adults who have periodic episodes of atrial fibrillation, including those with paroxysmal or persistent atrial fibrillation. It is used to prolong symptom-free periods, extending the time between symptoms of atrial fibrillation by maintaining a normal heartbeat.

Although this can be an effective treatment for many people, not everyone can take this antiarrhythmia medication. Information on propafenone SR should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before starting treatment to help minimize potential risks. For instance, people who have had a heart attack within the past two years or those who are taking certain medications may not be able to safely use propafenone SR.
