Tikosyn Drug Information

A healthcare provider may prescribe Tikosyn® (dofetilide) to treat atrial fibrillation (commonly referred to as "a-fib") or atrial flutter in adults. These are types of an irregular heart rate known medically as arrhythmias. Tikosyn can be used to get the heart back to a regular rhythm and to help maintain it.

This medication does have a risk of life-threatening irregular heart rhythms, so it can be started only in a hospital setting where careful monitoring and emergency care can be provided. You will remain in the hospital for at least three days after beginning treatment.

Although this can be an effective medicine for many people, not everyone can take this drug. Information on Tikosyn should be reviewed with your healthcare provider before taking it to help ensure a safe treatment process and minimize potential risks. For instance, people who have severe kidney disease or those who are taking certain medications may not be able to safely use Tikosyn.
