An infection is always a possibility whenever the skin is opened or a device is left in the body. Because this procedure is done in a sterile environment, this risk is minimized. However, an infection can occur anywhere, including near the device. Infections range from very minor ones that are only treated with antibiotics and a possible stay in the hospital to major infections requiring surgery or resulting in loss of life. The treatment of any infection will depend on its severity and location. Sometimes the device may have to be removed.
