Now Playing: What Is EPS and Why Is My Doctor Recommending It?
Video Text
Your doctor is recommending an Electro-Physiologic Study of your heart, also called EPS.
This study can help determine where problems in your heart's electrical system are located and which treatment is best for them.
Problems in your heart's electrical pathways can be caused by disease, heart damage, or a condition that you were born with. Whatever the cause, the result is abnormal heartbeats, and not enough blood and oxygen pumped to your body and brain.
When your heart's electrical system is not working right, you may experience symptoms such as feeling dizzy, lightheaded, tired, confused, or short of breath. You may also have had fainting spells, blurred vision, or palpitations, which is a pounding feeling in your chest.
Treatments for electrical problems in your heart may include using radio waves to fix the electrical pathway or using medications. In some cases, a small device called a pacemaker or an implantable defibrillator needs to be inserted in your body so that it can regulate your heart's electricity.
You and your doctor will decide together what is the best treatment option for you.
