A prescription medication, esmolol hydrochloride (Brevibloc®) is a fast-acting, temporary treatment for:
 
  • Certain irregular heart rhythms (arrhythmias) in emergency situations
  • A rapid heart rate (tachycardia) or high blood pressure (hypertension) during or after surgery.
 
This medicine comes in injectable form and is usually administered via an IV. Different factors affect the amount you will be given, and overdoses are a distinct possibility, so dosing is carefully calculated. Prior to receiving esmolol, inform your doctor of any other drugs you take and any other medical conditions you have.
