The Day of Mitral Valve Replacement SurgeryYou may wonder about what you should expect on the day of mitral valve replacement surgery. On the day of mitral valve replacement surgery, you will be taken to a pre-operative room or directly to the operating room. If you feel anxious on the day of mitral valve replacement surgery, you may request medication to help you relax. Patches will then be applied to your chest, arms, or legs for an electrocardiogram (EKG). The EKG measures the electrical activity of your heart on the day of mitral valve replacement surgery. Many tubes and lines will be placed, including an intravenous fluid line (IV) that will be used to administer medications and fluids.
