Nexterone Uses

Nexterone is licensed to help treat and prevent life-threatening heart rhythm problems called ventricular arrhythmias. It works by preventing the heart from responding to electrical signals that prompt the heart to beat prematurely. Nexterone is reserved for use in adults who have not adequately responded to other treatments. Off-label uses include treating atrial fibrillation or atrial flutter.

What Is Nexterone Used For?

Nexterone® (amiodarone premixed injection) is a prescription antiarrhythmic medication. It is approved to treat and prevent life-threatening heart rhythm problems known as ventricular arrhythmias. Nexterone is reserved for use in people who did not adequately respond to other medications.

What Are Ventricular Arrhythmias?

A ventricular arrhythmia is an arrhythmia that originates in the lower chambers of the heart (the ventricles). Not all ventricular arrhythmias are life-threatening. Nexterone is only approved to treat or prevent ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation, types of life-threatening ventricular arrhythmias.
Ventricular tachycardia is a type of arrhythmia in which the ventricles beat very quickly, often causing a heart rate in excess of 120 beats a minute. As a result, the ventricles may be unable to pump blood out to the rest of the body, potentially depriving important body organs of the oxygen-rich blood they need to function properly.
If ventricular tachycardia does not resolve, it may turn into ventricular fibrillation. Ventricular fibrillation is an extremely dangerous heart rhythm problem. During ventricular fibrillation, the ventricles beat in a very fast and disorganized manner, causing them to quiver, or fibrillate. Ventricular fibrillation must be treated immediately to prevent death.
Nexterone helps return the heart to a normal rhythm in people who have recurring episodes of ventricular tachycardia or ventricular fibrillation. Nexterone contains the active ingredient amiodarone. Amiodarone is also available in tablet form (Cordarone®, Pacerone®). Once the heart arrhythmia is under control, a healthcare provider may recommend a person switch to amiodarone tablets to help keep the heart beating normally.
