Nitroglycerin Ointment Dosing

The recommended dosing guidelines for using nitroglycerin ointment (Nitro-Bid®) call for a half-inch of the medicine to be applied to the skin twice daily. Usually, this ointment is applied once in the morning and then again six hours later. It is essential that your body has a break from this drug for at least 10 to 12 hours each day. Without this break, your body would become tolerant of the effects of nitroglycerin and the drug would become ineffective within 24 hours.
If this starting dosage does not adequately prevent chest pain (angina) attacks, your healthcare provider can increase the amount. However, you will still use the medicine twice daily.
