Pentoxifylline Dosage

Your kidney function and how well you respond to pentoxifylline are some of the factors that will help your healthcare provider determine the best dosage of pentoxifylline for your situation. In most cases, the standard dose for treating peripheral arterial disease is 400 mg taken three times a day with meals. If you experience side effects, you may need a lower dosage.

An Introduction to Your Dosage of Pentoxifylline

The dose of pentoxifylline (Trental®) your healthcare recommends will vary depending on a few different factors, such as:

  • How you respond to pentoxifylline
  • Your kidney function.

As is always the case, do not adjust your dosage unless your healthcare provider specifically tells you to do so.

Dosing for Peripheral Arterial Disease

The standard pentoxifylline dosage for improving blood flow and reducing the viscosity (thickness) of the blood is 400 mg three times a day at regular intervals. Studies have shown that doses higher than 400 mg three times daily do not improve effectiveness, but do increase the risk of side effects.

If nausea, vomiting, dizziness, or headaches occur with pentoxifylline use, the amount may be reduced to 400 mg twice daily. Please discuss any dosage reductions with your healthcare provider if you are experiencing these symptoms.

If you have kidney disease, your healthcare provider may recommend a lower dose.
