Closed Caption - Getting Started With a Pharmacological Stress Echocardiogram

Before your stress test, you should not eat or smoke for at least 2 to 3 hours.

When you arrive at the test site you may be asked to change into a hospital gown. However, some clinics will allow you to wear a short sleeve shirt that opens in the front. Wearing loose clothing and comfortable shoes is advised.

Be prepared for a brief physical and for some questions about your past medical history, your medications and allergies.

It is a good idea to bring a list of your medications with you. During this time, it is also important to tell your doctor if you have had a previous heart attack, angina, aortic stenosis, abnormal heartbeats, heart failure, or uncontrolled hypertension. This is important information for your doctor to have.

To get ready, EKG patches will be applied to your chest for electrocardiogram. A blood pressure cuff will also be applied to your arm to regularly check your blood pressure.

In order to give the drugs necessary for the test, an IV will be placed in your arm or hand.
