Generic Warfarin vs. Brand-name Pradaxa
The True Cost of Generic CoumadinIt may be tempting to compare the cost of Pradaxa with warfarin (Coumadin®, Jantoven®), an older anticoagulant also used to prevent strokes and blood clots in people with atrial fibrillation. Warfarin is much less expensive, compared to Pradaxa. However, it is important to take into account the cost of all of the monitoring necessary when using warfarin (such monitoring is unnecessary for Pradaxa).
Also, because Pradaxa is more effective than warfarin, it is important to take into account the cost of dealing with a stroke or blood clot.
Lastly, warfarin does not start working for several days, and this often results in an extended hospital stay and the use of expensive injectable anticoagulant drugs when people first start taking warfarin. Because Pradaxa starts working rapidly, these costs will often be avoidable.
