What Is Propafenone SR Used For?

How Does This Medicine Work?

Propafenone SR belongs to a group of medications known as Class I antiarrhythmics. Class I antiarrhythmic medications block sodium channels in the heart. Propafenone SR works by slowing down the speed at which electrical impulses move through the heart, which helps stabilize the heart rhythm.
Propafenone SR is specially formulated so the medication is slowly released from the capsule over time. This allows propafenone SR to be taken only two times a day, compared to three times a day with regular propafenone.

Can Children Use Propafenone SR?

Propafenone SR has not been adequately studied in children, and is not approved for use in this age group (usually defined as individuals younger than 18 years old). Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medicine in children.

Is It Safe for Older Adults?

Older adults can use propafenone SR. In clinical trials, 46 percent of people were 65 years of age or older. Those over the age of 65 did not respond any differently to the medication than those younger than age 65. However, some older adults may be more sensitive to the effects of this medication. Therefore, in general, older adults may need to be closely monitored during propafenone SR treatment.

What About Off-Label Uses?

On occasion, your healthcare provider may recommend this medication for treating something other than the conditions discussed in this article. This is called an "off-label" use. Propafenone SR may be prescribed off-label for the following uses:
  • Maintaining a normal heartbeat in people with atrial flutter or paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia
  • Converting atrial fibrillation to a normal heartbeat
  • Treating certain arrhythmias of the ventricles
  • Treating heart rhythm problems in children
  • Treating Wolff-Parkinson-White syndrome.
