Hyponatremia and Samsca

Healthcare providers may prescribe Samsca® (tolvaptan) to treat hyponatremia in adults. Hyponatremia is the medical term for having low levels of sodium in the blood. It occurs when there is too much water in the body, which dilutes the sodium in the blood. Samsca is designed to help increase blood sodium levels in adults who have certain medical conditions, such as heart failure, liver disease, and syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone (SIADH).

Samsca belongs to a group of medicines known as vasopressin receptor antagonists. This drug works by blocking the effects of a hormone known as vasopressin, which regulates the amount of water in the body. By blocking the effects of this hormone, Samsca causes more water to be removed as urine, without causing sodium to leave the body. This results in higher blood sodium levels.
