Samsca Uses

How Does It Work?

Samsca works by blocking the effects of a hormone known as vasopressin. Vasopressin helps regulate the amount of water in the body. By blocking the effects of this hormone, Samsca causes more water to be removed as urine, without causing sodium to leave the body. This results in higher blood sodium levels.

Is It Safe for Children to Use Samsca?

Samsca has not been approved for use in children (usually defined as individuals younger than 18 years old), as it has not been adequately studied in this age group. Talk to your child's healthcare provider about the risks and benefits of using this medicine in children.

Can Older Adults Use It?

Older adults can use Samsca. In clinical studies, there were no differences in how well Samsca was tolerated or how it worked in older versus younger adults. However, some older adults may be more sensitive to the medication. Therefore, Samsca should generally be used with caution in older individuals.
