Tambocor Dosage

Tambocor Dosing for Sustained Ventricular Tachycardia (SVT)

The usual recommended dosage of Tambocor for preventing SVT is usually 100 mg every 12 hours. Your healthcare provider may increase this amount by 50 mg twice a day, no more often than every four days, until you are at a dosage that adequately controls your condition. Using higher starting doses or increasing the amount too quickly may increase the risk for developing a new arrhythmia or heart failure.

Most people with SVT do not need more than 150 mg every 12 hours. The maximum Tambocor amount for preventing SVT is 400 mg a day (200 mg every 12 hours).

Once your heart arrhythmia is adequately controlled, your healthcare provider may periodically try to reduce your dosage to help minimize your risk for Tambocor side effects. Make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop symptoms on a lower dosage.

People with severe kidney disease may need to be started on lower amounts. People who are taking another antiarrhythmia medication known as amiodarone (Cordarone®, Pacerone®) will also be given lower Tambocor doses.

What Is the Recommended Tambocor Dosage for Children?

The recommended Tambocor dose for treating arrhythmias in children is based on body surface area, which is normally calculated using the child's height and weight. For children under 6 months of age, the recommended initial dose is 50 mg per meters squared (mg/m2) body surface area, divided every 8 or 12 hours throughout the day. For children older than 6 months of age, the recommended initial dose is 100 mg/m2 body surface area, divided every 8 or 12 hours throughout the day. Children should not be given more than 200 mg/m2 a day.

Tambocor Blood Levels

Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor the level of Tambocor in your blood (Tambocor plasma levels). Most people are successfully treated with plasma levels between 0.2 and 1.0 µg/mL. Higher levels may increase the risk for Tambocor side effects, including potentially serious heart problems.

The manufacturer of Tambocor states that plasma-level monitoring is required in people with severe kidney or liver disease. This monitoring is also recommended in people with moderate liver disease, heart failure, or people taking amiodarone.
