Ticagrelor (
Brilinta™) is a prescription medication approved to prevent harmful blood clots from forming in people who have been hospitalized with chest pain or have had a certain type of
heart attack. These conditions are often known as acute coronary syndrome (ACS).
Ticagrelor is also used in combination with aspirin to reduce the risk of future heart attacks,
strokes, or blood clots in a stent (a tube placed in an artery of the heart during an
angioplasty procedure).
Just like any medicine, ticagrelor can cause side effects.
Although some reactions to this medication are merely bothersome, some can be dangerous. Most serious side effects are related to the increased risk of bleeding.
In clinical studies, some of the most common problems reported in people taking this medication (plus aspirin) included but were not limited to:
- Bleeding, including dangerous internal bleeding
- Shortness of breath.
