Tikosyn Drug Interactions

Tikosyn Drug Interactions Explained

The following sections explain in detail the potentially negative interactions that can occur when Tikosyn is combined with any of the drugs listed above.

Amiloride
Amiloride may increase blood levels of Tikosyn, which could increase the risk for Tikosyn side effects. Your healthcare provider may choose to monitor your heartbeat more closely if you take these medicines together. Because people taking Tikosyn should not take hydrochlorothiazide (HCTZ), Tikosyn should not be taken with the combination product amiloride-HCTZ.

Artemether
Combining artemether with Tikosyn could increase your risk for a potentially life-threatening heart rhythm problem. These medicines should not be taken together.

Certain Antifungal Medications
Certain antifungal medicines may increase the level of Tikosyn in the bloodstream, potentially increasing the risk for a dangerous abnormal heartbeat. The manufacturer of Tikosyn recommends not using it with ketoconazole. In general, all of the antifungals listed above (known as "azole antifungals") should be avoided in people who are taking Tikosyn.

Cimetidine
Cimetidine increases blood levels of Tikosyn, which increases the risk for a potentially life-threatening abnormal heartbeat. You should not take cimetidine with Tikosyn. If you need a medication for reflux, ask your healthcare provider or pharmacist about an alternative medicine that is safe for use with Tikosyn.

CYP 3A4 Inhibitor Medications
The liver breaks down Tikosyn using enzymes known as CYP 3A4 enzymes, and medications known as CYP 3A4 inhibitors can decrease the activity of these enzymes. Thus, combining Tikosyn with one of these drugs may increase the level of Tikosyn in your bloodstream, increasing your risk for side effects. The manufacturer of Tikosyn recommends it be used cautiously in combination with CYP 3A4 inhibitors. Therefore, your healthcare provider may need to closely monitor you if you take these medicines together.

Dolutegravir
Dolutegravir may increase blood levels of Tikosyn, increasing the risk for a dangerous heart rhythm problem. These medicines should not be used together.
